Types of Humanitarian Immigration Programs in the US

The US offers several humanitarian-based immigration programs that could allow you or someone you love to legally enter and remain in the US and receive immigration benefits, from work authorization to adjustment of status. We have discussed many of these programs below:

Asylum

Asylum is a humanitarian-based immigration program that could protect you from persecution in your home country. The US may grant asylum if you face imprisonment, physical harm, or other threats because of your race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or affiliation with a social group.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

If you are seeking relief from an ongoing armed conflict, natural disaster, or another negatively impactful event, securing Temporary Protected Status (TPS) can allow you to remain and work in the US for a designated period.

Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS)

Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) is a program that offers permanent residency to eligible minors who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected by a parent in their home country.

U & T Visas

These visas may be available if you have been a victim of a crime, such as domestic violence or human trafficking, or if you can assist in the investigation and prosecution of these types of crimes.

Deferred Enforced Departure (DED)

Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) is a form of temporary relief the president grants. It would allow you to remain in the US without fear of removal for a specified period.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

If you came to the US as a child, DACA could allow you to remain in the country without fear of deportation and maintain work authorization. You must renew your status under DACA every two years and continue to meet program requirements.

Humanitarian Parole

Humanitarian parole is a discretionary program that may allow you to temporarily enter the US during a serious humanitarian crisis. You may also be granted humanitarian parole if your presence in the country would provide some significant benefit to the public.

Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Self-Petition

Under the VAWA, you and your children may be granted admission to the US if you have been the victim of abuse at the hands of a US citizen or permanent resident.
